Batik Wax Pelleted
Material Health & Safety Data Sheet – Revised 10/01/2023
Batik Wax – All Melting Points
1. IDENTIFICATION
Batik Wax, solid slab or pellets.
2. COMPOSITION
A mixture of solid saturated hydrocarbons, molecular formula Cn H2n+2. Hazardous ingredients: None.
3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Not classified as hazardous for supply under UK CPL or CHIP Regulations. EC Labelling: None
4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Solid: None
Liquid: Because it is often used in the molten state at elevated temperatures there is a risk of thermal burns and therefore contact with the skin should be avoided and precautions taken against accidental splashes.
In the event of wax entering the eyes these should be flushed immediately with water for 15 minutes and medical attention obtained. Molten wax on the skin should be cooled rapidly by cold water and removed carefully from the skin in not less than 30 minutes to avoid blistering, preferably under medical supervision to avoid tissue damage.
5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES
Although not classified as inflammable by the criteria used for transport purposes in the UK, nevertheless this product will burn and in the event of a small fire, foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical powder, sand or earth may be employed; for large fires use foam or water fog.
Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide CO2 smoke.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Personal precautions | Liquid – remove persons to safety. |
Environment | In the event of a large spillage, any wax entering the sewers will solidify and may cause blockages. The authorities should be informed if this occurs. Allow spilt hot wax to cool and solidify and remove the solid for subsequent disposal. |
7. HANDLING & STORAGE
No special measures necessary if used correctly.
Solid wax can be stored for indefinite periods in paperboard boxes, woven polypropylene bags or cartons on pallets away from possible sources of contamination and in cool, dry conditions.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/PERSONAL PROTECTION
Adequate personal protective equipment must be worn when handling wax in molten state.
9. PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
Practically insoluble in cold water, sparingly soluble in organic solvents in the cold, but quite soluble hot. Low chemical reactivity. Incompatible with strong oxidisers.
10.STABILITY & REACTIVITY
Under normal conditions no hazardous reactions likely.
Stable at ambient temperatures. Flash point greater than 204°C.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Batik Wax poses virtually no hazard to health when used in normal industrial practice. There is no hazard from inhalation of the vapour nor is ingestion considered to be a normal industrial hazard. Wax fumes may cause eye and respiratory tract irritation if present in sufficiently high concentration and in such circumstances efficient localised extraction must be employed. Skin sensitisation or irritation is very infrequent.
12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Batik Wax is unlikely to cause any environmental hazards although a spillage of hot wax could produce local scorch damage. It is expected to be non-toxic to aquatic organisms, fish and mammalian wild life.
13. DISPOSAL CONDITIONS
Disposal considerations must take into account that waxes are generally non-biogradable in the short term. Non-recoverable waste should be disposed of via a licensed waste contractor.
14. TRANSPORT INFORMATION
Batik Wax in solid form is not classified as hazardous for transport. This product does not require a hazard warning label in accordance with EEC Directives.
15. REGULATORY INFORMATION
Batik Wax is not classified as hazardous for supply under UK CPL or CHIP Regulations.
