Transferring Inkjet Printed Images Using Colourcraft C&A Ltd Transfer Medium
This medium enables the transfer of colour or black and white images produced from newspapers, magazines and photographs using an inkjet printer. The images can be transferred onto paper or a close weave fabric such as calico.
Image Transfer Method
Equipment and Materials
- Image Transfer Medium
- Newspaper to put underneath you work
- A soft, wide paint brush and a smaller brush
- A pot of water to wash your brushes in
- Small sponges or paintbrushes
- Scissors
- A spoon
- Kitchen towel/soft cloth
- Inkjet prints
- Paper or Fabric
- Gesso if required
Points to Remember
- Image Transfer Medium is tacky – be careful pages do not become stuck together. Protect previous pages by inserting a sheet of scrap paper behind the page currently being worked on.
- Wash brushes immediately after using image transfer medium using soap and warm water.
- Do not use a hair dryer on a high setting to dry work. Use gentle heat.
Getting Started
- The image must be an inkjet print, you will achieve the best results if you:
- Use good quality copy paper
- Have a good quality print e.g. best rather than draft
- It may be necessary to flip the image over before printing as it will be reversed when it is transferred onto paper or fabric. This is important if you are using text.
- Select your inkjet image
2. If you do not wish the text of a book to be noticeable, prepare the receiving surface with gesso or emulsion if required. If background colour is required, apply at this stage.
3. Once the receiving surface is dry, paint over with an even coat of image transfer medium.
4. Coat the surface of the print with image transfer medium. Ensure the copy is dry first. (NOTE: inkjet colours are water soluble and will smear if not dry or if they are worked too much.)
5. Turn the image over and place on top of the receiving surface. Press down firmly then rub over the entire surface thoroughly for a minute using the back of a spoon.
6. Wait for the work to dry completely. A hairdryer will accelerate the process.
7. When work is dry brush some water onto the back of the inkjet image.
8. Start to rub away the paper with your finger. Rub gently and you will remove the top layer of paper leaving the transferred image. Clean the page by removing any paper bits with kitchen towel or dry sponge.
