Melting the wax: Melt to a temperature between 130 deg F and 150 deg F using a batik melting If the wax begins to smoke it is too hot. In the microwave: Place soy wax in a microwavable container.  Melt on medium temperature for approximately 1- 2 minutes depending upon the quantity being melted. When the wax begins to thicken, reheat in the microwave for approximately 30 seconds, it will then be ready to use again.  Apply the hot wax using Tjanting tools, metal cutters, brushes, sponge brushes, or create your own shapes by bending Colourcraft C & A Ltd Aluminium Wire Rod.

Removing the wax: Place some sheets of plain newsprint on the ironing surface.  Place the fabric on top of this and cover with several more layers of plain newsprint. Using a flat iron if you have one available, as soy wax can clog the vents of a steam iron, set to the hottest temperature that the fabric will withstand and iron the surface of the newsprint pressing firmly.  Depending upon the amount of soy wax used, when the soy wax has penetrated the paper, replace it with fresh sheets and repeat the process.

Washing: Add 1tsp (5ml) Colsperse (Available from Colourcraft C & A Limited) to warm water and rinse thoroughly.  Then rinse again several times in warm water until all traces of wax are removed. Do not leave hot wax unattended or use with an open flame. Wax forms potentially hazardous vapours at high temperatures and may ignite.  Because soy wax is soluble in water it will only give partial results when carrying out immersion dyeing techniques.
