Tyvek®

Made from 100% polyethylene, Tyvek® by DuPont can be used to create many unique surface effects

  • Shrinks and bubbles when heat is applied
  • Produces interesting distressed/3d effects when used with a heat gun
  • Can be moulded, overprinted and layered.

There are different weights of Tyvek® – heavyweight which has the appearance and feel of paper and lightweight, with the appearance and feel of fabric.  Heavyweight Tyvek® gives a more pronounced, effect than lightweight Tyvek® where the effect is more subtle.

Pack of 5 x A4 Sheets Tyvek®  Heavyweight (Paper)

Instructions

  • Before heating, Tyvek® can be coloured and stitched into.  Colourcraft fabric paints and fabric dyes, water based paints such as the Colourcraft Aztec range, Brusho Acrylic Sprays look great and  felt pens are ideal.
  • Oil based products are unsuitable as they give off fumes when heated.
  • Apply colour to both sides of the Tyvek®.
  •  Stitch into it if required.
  • Apply heat using either an iron or heat gun.
  • If using an iron, place the Tyvek® between two pieces of baking parchment.
  • Try hovering the iron over the parchment paper just touching it, don’t press down.
  • Once above completed turnover and try pressing down quickly a few times on the result obtained by hovering. You can get a lace effect, be careful it can happen quickly. Play a little for different results.
  • Try trapping cut pieces between an ironed flat piece of Angelina Fibres, then add Tyvek then trap by putting a few strands of Angelina on top or a piece of Angelina Film, cover with Baking parchment and then hover over the top with a hot iron. Experimenting can give different results.
  • When using a heat gun experiment with holding it closer and further away in order to obtain different effects.  If too much heat is applied the Tyvek® will completely disappear.
  • Additional decoration can be added once the design is cool if required.
  • Use in a well ventilated room.  Care should be taken when applying heat
