Image Transfer Medium

Instructions for transferring inkjet images using Image Transfer Medium

Getting Started

  • The image must be an inkjet print
  • First select and print the image that you wish to transfer. You may need to flip the image as it will be reversed when it’s transferred onto paper or fabric.
  • Make sure the ink is dry-leave it for an hour or so.
  • Make sure it’s good quality print –opt for BEST rather than DRAFT.
  • Print onto good quality copy paper.
  • You can transfer images onto paper and onto fabric.
  • If you are choosing paper then experiment with different types- you will get varying results depending on the finish, colour and weight of the paper.
  • If you are to transfer an image onto a printed page then you can apply a coat of white/ coloured emulsion paint or Gesso to give a white or coloured ground. Or you can transfer straight onto the printed page.
  • If you are to use fabrics then choose a calico or similar fabric with a close weave

Equipment & Materials

  • Image Transfer Medium
  • A soft, wide paint brush for Image Transfer Medium.
  • Water.
  • Small sponges or paintbrushes .
  • A spoon.
  • Kitchen towel/ soft cloth
  • Inkjet images
  • Paper or fabric
  • White emulsion paint or Gesso

Method (Using Colourcraft Image Transfer Medium)

  1. If you wish, prepare the receiving paper by painting with a thin coat of emulsion paint or Gesso. Allow to dry.
  2. Paint the surface of your print with Image Transfer Medium. Brush gently – vigorous brushing may cause the ink to smear.
  3. Now paint the receiving surface with Image Transfer Medium.
  4. Whilst the medium is still wet place the inkjet print face down onto the prepared receiving surface. Rub all over with the back of a spoon using a circular movement. Leave to dry.
  5. When the work is dry lightly sponge or paint water over the back of the print to dampen it-don’t get it too wet!
  6. Start to rub the back of the paper away with a fingertip. You will see the transferred image start to appear. Be careful-if you keep rubbing you will rub it away!!! Brush away any paper bits with kitchen towel and leave to dry.
